Pet stores won't take them ( at least not good pet stores ), because they don't know where it's been or what illnesses and parasites it might have. They are not going to take the chance on bringing in a turtle that might harm their populations.
Best thing to do is websearch for a turtle rescue/rehabilitator in your area, and second get on a red ear slider forum, like on kingsnake.com, and ask if anyone wants to adopt her. Check with others on the forum and read their messages to make sure you are finding a home for her where they know what they are doing.
If you love her, then make the effort. Drive to give her to the right rescue person if you have to.

Instead of a pet store that may have someone whom is only familiar with cats or dogs try looking online for a turtle forums group who have people looking to adopt a turtle from other people. The people in these type of groups are usually familiar with a turtles needs and are usually better prepared for that type of pet.

Call your local human society. They could either take it or tell you who could. Definitely don't release it into the wild. If it did make it on its own they are efficient predators that upset the balance of nature. Sliders are getting more common all over because of this practice (not that you were going to, I just wanted to make sure.. no offense).
I would be sad if our slider Skipper was abandoned somewhere because he is a cool turtle and possibly secretly a teenaged mutant ninja turtle (OK, I made the last bit up).

I have a pond outside and am looking for adoptable turtles. I decided instead of buying cute lil babies, I'l adopt them cuz someone needs to take care of them.
Depending on where you live, I could always take it.
Otherwise, if you give it to a shelter, people usually pick them up there. Turtles are common pets, even when they are big. Its really cool.

Usually the fastest way is a flyer at a few local pet shops offering it for free to a good home.
