A hypothesis is your idea of "why" something happens.

Example: Celery stalks placed in water become crisp.
(That's the observation.)

Hypothesis: Water goes into the cells of the celery by osmosis.

Prediction: If my hypothesis is correct, celery will weigh more after it has been soaked in water.

a hypothesis is basically what you think is going to happen
for example:if you are doing an experiment to see whether or not a certain plant will grow in a certain condition, your hypothesis can either be it wil grow or it won't grow
