What is the hair near your genital area for exactly...

Actually the hair serves a very important purpose. It allows air to circulate around the area to evaporate perspiration. If your clothes are in direct contact with your skin, the skin tends to stay wet longer. That can lead to irritation, fungus, bacterial infection (sometimes quite serious) and bad smell. Most people who shave there smell kind of ripe no matter how often they wash.

The hair grows there when you reach maturity, which is the same time sweat glands kick into high gear. Our bodies are very finely tuned, and getting rid of one element (such as hair) can make things go very wrong -- bad smell, infections -- in a related area (the skin). It's hard to smell our own body odors, by the way, so don't depend on your nose to warn you when you're smelling kind of rotted out.

Depends on who you ask, but the most reliable answers seem to come from the anthropologist. Being that pubic hair occurs about the same time your genitals start to grow in puberty, many suggest that the hair is there for pheromone collection. Simply put, to hold that special scent to attract a mate. Obviously these days we find attracting a mate by body odor repulsive, but that doesn't change the fact that there is a certain attraction that occurs when we smell that particular smell. These days, most people don't worry about it. But for a good number of people, shaving it off has become pretty popular. Personally, I hate it, think it's the worst thing that can happen during puberty and get rid of it whenever I can. But it's more a personal option than anything else. Bottom line, if you want to smell less, shave it off, but be careful. (that goes for pit hair too!)

Both answers you have are good, plus the hair keeps the flies from biting since your smell will attract them also. If you were still in an aboriginal society and merely wore a breechcloth or maybe just a long gourd for show.
