The character of Sam is mentally challenged and is raising a daughter. He loses custody and is deemed "unfit". The social problem in this movie is that all of these high powered people looked upon Sam as a bad father because he had a deficiancy. This is what society does. We ourcast people because they are different. I think it's a great movie about overcoming adversity.

I would think that it is the public's ability to accept that a mentally challenged man (Sean Penn) could be capable of raising a daughter. His daughter (Dakota Fanning) is not mentally challenged and actually quite a brilliant child. Sean is kind and very hard working, and absolutely adores her. Yet, the "system" is trying to have her taken away because they fear his ability to care for her, teach her things, manage a day to day life as a father, etc.
Michelle Pfieffer enters in as his attorney. She has sympathy for him, but in the beginning, really does not have high hopes that he can raise her well either. In the end, however, she is quite surprised as is everyone else.
How truthful this movie is, I am not sure. Yet, they do present many scenes in which he truly shows his love for her. He is simple minded-yes, and his love for her is simple too which makes it so extra beautiful. In his simple existence, he is able to purely love, free of outside pressures and expectations. His little girl, though very aware of his limitations, becomes so attached to him because he loves her so purely. She adors him too in his childlike existence.
So, I really think social problems would be acceptance by society. People fear what they do not understand, and they really do not understand him. Though in the end, they do understand what true love is and the lengths that a man is willing to go to in order to keep his child.

The main social problem is that society assumes that an individual with a handicap is automatically not able to be a good parent.

Hi phyCor, My son is an " Acute Schizophrenic". Until his "illness" was recognized, I thought he was a "normal/rebelling/teenager". Well, it wasn't until he was "Dis-Honorably" discharged from the "NAVY", that we saw a "problem/pattern". My suggestion would be to take a course on "Mental-Illnesses" in your local community. I know, I have steered "off-course" of the question. However, "The Apple, Doesn't Fall Far From The Tree". So, in retrospect...I believe (from my 8 month "course" into understanding "Mental Illness") the "character" that Sean Penn portrayed was border-line "Autistic" with "Bi-Polar"/Schizophenic- Similarities". And this is just one mother's...opinion! XOXO Moonpie

i didnt realize autistic was a social problem, or even a noun.
the social 'problem' is whether or not disabled people should have equal rights (ie childcare)
