What would happen if you ate poo?!?

I was watching a movie and they made this one guy eat poo, and quickly thought to myself; what woulld become of the situation if that were to happen? Because I thought poo was the waste the body did'nt need. Would the poo then be turned into some sort of sub-poo substance from that state, or would it pass right through and be hard as a rock? I'm perplexed...any suggestions?

It really depends on what's in it. Different people digest things differently. No matter what you ingest (poo or otherwise), if your body can tolerate it and you don't vomit, your digestive enzymes will attempt to break it down. These enzymes are after specific types of chemicals. Some attempt to break down carbohydrates into more basic sugars, some attempt to break down proteins into amino acids, etc. Most of this happens in the stomach, and the stuff moves on to the intestines where the nutrients and water are absorbed through the intestinal wall. The leftovers are excreted as poo. If you eat this, chances are there's not much left worth digesting and it will just pass through as poo again (if you don't vomit). Be aware, though, that the things in your intestines are not meant to be in your stomach. Eating poo is a good way to get e-coli. Eating someone else's poo is a good way to get any diseases they carry, such as hepatitis or HIV. This is probably why the vomit center of your brain wouldn't likely allow it to continue and you'd vomit. Of course, if it was the Shawshank Redemption, I think that was animal poo, which, bacteria and flavor aside, might actually contain some digestible material that the animal couldn't digest.
