Last night, i saw the city breathing
great gusts of people,
rushing in and
puffing out
of station's singing mouths

last night, i saw the city laughiing
take-aways got the gigles,
cinemas split thier sdies,
and living rooms completely ceased themselves!

last night, i saw the city dancing
shadows were cheek to cheek with brick walls,
trians wiglged thier hips all over the place,
and the trees
in the breeze,
puton a show for an audience of windows!

last night, i saw the city starving
snakign avenue smacked her lips
and swallowed seven roundabouts!
fat office blocks got stuffed with light
and gloated over empty parking lots.

last night, i saw the city crying.
cracked windows poured falling stars
and the streets were paved with mirrors.

lastnight i saw the city sleeping
roasds night-dreamed
street lamps quietely boasted
whe i grow up, i'm oging to be a star!
and the wind,
like a cat,
snoozed in the nooks of roofs.

first it's talking about the livelyness of the city and how busy it is.
laughing- how happy the people are with the entertainment.
dancing- everything seemed so happy with it's movement.
starving- the poor people are starving and the rich are gloating.
crying- I think its about broken dreams.
sleeping- tomorrow is a new day.
This is just my opinion but it's about all the things that go on in cities, the good and the bad.

What a wonderful poem. I don't think it's "trying to say" anything. It's an image like a painting. Can't you see in your imagaination the city like a giant person laughing and sleeping and breathing? It does tell a lot about what makes a city a healthy and happy place. If I were a terribly clever writer I could probably write another verse about the city being sick and coughing and choking on smoke. And breaking out in crime. Or suffering from a rash of crooked politicians. But as it is it's a lovely image of a living city.

It is comparing a city and the way a city functions to a person. The part where the city is breathing and people are coming and going from the station, that's rush hour in a big city, the part where it is sleeping is the time after midnight- 1am when no one is out on the road much. Just try to picture the description in your mind.

The poet describes the city comparing it to a human being, it experiences human feelings, engages in human activities. Perhaps this is a reflection of the fact that the city is a human construction; its nature is directly the result of the nature of its creators.

It's just saying the city seems alive and it's explaining how it's alive by using humanity like traits
