From a review:This story was written by Conroy in 1976 and is themed in the 1960's
It's autobiographical - he tells the story of a teaching job he took on an island off the coast of South Carolina, where he battled the problems of teaching poor black kids that were being held back due to the system's neglect.

You should really read the book. It's excellent. (If you're not into reading, watch the movie 'Conrack'.) Character - Pat 'Conrack' Conroy was a dedicated teacher with a love of Beethoven who was hired to teach a classroom of black students. Conflict - The white school board who didn't think the black children should actually learn anything. Setting - A small island in South Carolina. The end - Conrack was fired at the end of the school year because he actually taught the children a lot of things, including how to swim.
