I had the same problem after I had my children. You could put something like "Thank you for sharing these happy days welcoming our child into the world. We appeciate all you have done for us."

[Here's how I'd write the letter if I was writing it for my wife (she assigns me all Christmas letters and thank you notes).]

Dear [NAME],

Now, I understand what parents mean by "they grow up so quickly." Please accept my belated thank you and appreciation for your generous gifts, whether from the baby shower, the baptism, or both. I was afraid if I didn't send my thank you cards now, I'd have to add 'graduation,' too.

I’d hope you understand what I lack in timeliness, is compensated by sincerity. My attention and time is focused on being a mother. I’ve lost track of time. Life is a series of hungry cries, wet cries, happy cries and, well, occasional a mother's cry.

Don’t worry. I love being a mother. I’ve just had to lower my standards to accomodate my new responsibility. Erma Bombeck said, “Housework, if you do it right, will kill you.” That should be carved in stone and made into a monument.

I recently got the hang of diapering on the fly (chubby little legs flailing around) after reading Roy Cooper’s book, “Calf Roping: The World Champion's Guide For Winning Runs.”

You see, while I’ve lost track of time, I haven’t lost my sense of humor.

Thank you again for your kindness.

Best wishes,

[NAME]
