Jersey is the name of one of the Channel Islands ( Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark and maybe a few small spots of land as well.) Maybe New Jersey bore a resemblance to the landscape of the Islands, or whomever named it may have had connections with the Channel Islands. The Channel Islands are nearer to France than England and have an interesting history if you care to search.

New Jersey is a state in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the United States. The state is named after the island of Jersey in the English Channel. It is bordered on the north by New York, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the southwest by Delaware, and on the west by Pennsylvania. Parts of New Jersey lie within the metropolitan areas of New York and Philadelphia.

I thougth you were looking for its nick name, The Garden State.
I am sure it was named by the original settlers who came from Europe. I would say, that some country or region may of had a name similar to Jersey, and they named their new home New Jersey. I know Nova Scottie is New Scotland

New Jersey is named after the largest Channel Island.

Unlike England which was always polarised by religion Jersey always offered a haven to anyone, Protestant or Catholic who was rich enough to live there.

Hence when settlers arrived in America to escape religious persecution some rich settler may have named it after their old homeland.

NEW JERSEY's relation to the Roman Empire may not be immediately apparent, but its name links it to the period when the Romans controlled Britain. New Jersey is named after the Channel Island Jersey, just off the coast of Normandy. One of Jersey's prominent native sons was Sir George Carteret (c. 1610–1680). In 1664, he was granted the territory between the Hudson and Delaware rivers, which was then called New Jersey in his honor. Jersey comes from Latin Caesarea, Caesaria (īnsula), “Caesar's (island).”

because 'OLD' Jersey is in England; like York and Hampshire;
so the British settlers here named states after the places in England, with a 'New' in front of it.

In fact, New York City was originally called New Amsterdam, because there were many Dutch settlers in the area so they named it after Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
