i would walk downhill , eventually i would come to a stream and that would likely lead to a road or a town... or you could just burn the forest down and hope someone notices...j/k

If you are so lost that you have no idea of what direction you came from then find a stream and follow it. streams usually lead to a place where there are people. Animal trails usually lead to streams. following a stream is a downhill trek as opposed to climbing uphill and using more energy. Moss grows on the north side of trees in most cases but now always. the sun rises in the east and sets in the west in the united states. the two bottom stars of the big dipper point to the north star so again you know north even if its dark. Weather, climate, terrain and numerous other circumstances can either make finding one's way out easier or much more difficult. I have always carried a survival booklet with me when i go into the woods as well as a water purifyer, and warm clothing. be prepared to go into the woods and chances are you will not be lost for very long.

Wow this Q. is a complex one with many variables to start with! #1 let someone know where your headed when you go hiking for example. #2 go equipped for the terrain your in, such as put a compass, a pocket knife , and some matches in anything that's water-proof. Tell someone how long you plan on being gone, and stick with it. If you become lost don't panic and run around unnecessarily. Don't abandon any clothing you have. Find an opening and build a fire for the resuers to see from the air. And last but no least stay put, your lost remember so where you think your going?

First of all, you should never venture into unfamiliar woodlands (or anywhere for that matter) without telling someone where you are going and what your itinerary is. Make sure you have a charged cell phone or other GPS device and food and water enough to last an "extra" day. If you find yourself lost, stay where you are. The more you move around the harder it will be to find you!

Check your compass and go in one direction. If that doesn't work shoot up a couple of flares-- that should draw a crowd.
