What the whole "x" and "y" chromosomes are, are the 23rd pair of chromosomes that a human being has. Women have "XX" and men have "Xx" - but the little "x" looked like a "y", hence "XY" as we now know it. It's been a while since I've had bio, but if my memory serves, it is sometimes possible for a man to have an "XXY" in which case he is sterile, but still have the physical attributes of a male. I'm not quite sure if that really helps at all...but unfortunately, it's been too many years since I've had bio to answer the question fully, but I thought that that was kind of neat that some guys can be a little more feminine than others.

Everybody has at least one X chromosome, women XX and men XY. It is possible however for a male to have 2 X chromosomes if he is a Kleinfelder male and an XXY chromosome triplet. These men usually seem to be rather feminine and often require medication and possibly surgery to appear more masculine.

if you have a Y, you are a woman. that is the only way. everyone passes on an X, but you need a Y.
