I've been playing since I was 5, but how does that help me in life? ex:college... I don't plan on becoming a famous pianist or anything. Or was just learning to play just a waste of time?

There have been a couple of ways knowing how to play the piano has helped me.

First of all, I am a great typer. My fingers fly. If I have a paper or presentation to write, it just takes me less time than others - because how fast I type - with accuracy!

That's how piano has concretely helped my - but music is more than just a skill, it is a rounding of your education.
Thomas Jefferson said something like: I study war so that my sons may study engineering and their sons may study music.

I'm in my 40's and I can't tell you the number of adults I know who wished they knew a little piano. It's on the list of to-do's for a lot of people. In the case of piano, I am one the "haves" versus the the have nots". It matters -the feeling that you know something extra matters.

When you get to college, you may run into differnt parents at different functions. To be able to discuss and appreciate Beethoven versus Chopin and know the various symphonies will set you apart in the conversation.

You just don't know what doors will open and who you will meet because of this - but it is time well spent and at the very least you learned the importance of practice. :)

Well, it counts as an activity and shows colleges that you can stick with something for the long term. And also, piano is not easy, so just sticking with it is a really big thing.

There's a lot of research that shows piano players are better at math and logic than non-musicians; music helps build better neurons and that sort of thing.

If it relaxes you, that's also a very important thing. You should definitely be playing stuff that makes you happy. It doesn't matter if you are a pro or not.

Piano-playing can be a great way to make friends, especially if you have a large repertoire. People still like to gather around the piano and sing corny songs (-:. It's a really romantic thing to do.

Also, piano-playing is great for your co-ordination. These days we have typing, but typing isn't always as creative and satisfying.

I'd stay stick with it, at least for a little while more. It's a good lifeskill to have. (-: And will come in handy if you have kids who take the piano!

It gave you the ability to read music and have hand eye coordination. You dont really see the benefit but its there.
It probably raised your IQ a little also.
But If you dont like it anymore then set your sights on other things you like. Forget the piano for now you can always come back to it.
