The Rosetta stone was discovered by Champollion...?

Question

in the Mediterranean sea near the city of Rosetta in Egypt. This discovery helped in deciphering the ancient Egyptian writings. Three languages were carved on the stone:

1. What are the three languages?

2. What is the only clue that immensely helped in the deciphering other than the three different languages?

Without that specific clue, the deciphering could lagged behind for a longer period of time. HINT: It is something the ancient Egyptians used to include in their writings whenever a specific name occured.

Pleas people, do not refer me to websites. I want to know what you already know.

The three languages were Hieroglyphics, Greek, and Demotic, a later Egyptian writing..

I seem to recall it was a cartouche. The names were not "Egyptian," so they had to be written phoenetically in demotic. It was those cartouches, or symbols for certain sounds, that led them to realize that demotic was in fact a phonetic script. The coptic language was a big help in figuring all this out.

I know the name was that Ptolemy V.

Aadel, there are not actually three langauages contained on the Rosetta Stone, there are two languages but three different scripts.

These are classical Greek, and two forms of Egyptian : hieroglyphic and Demotic (a precursor of Coptic).

The stone itself is a decree from Ptolemy V and it was his name, written in a cartouche, that was the key to interpreting hieroglyphs as a phonetic language, rather than a script.

Monc is correct. The languages were Eyptian hieroglyphics and Greek. The cartouche was an ellipse inscribed around a "word." The decipherer guessed that characters inscribed within an oval must be the name of an important person. I seem to remember that one such name was "Cyrus," king of Persia. According to the hieroglyphics and the Greek text, the name would be "Kurush."

it was a translation on a stone tablet in old and new Egyptian writing that also included a translation in Greek i cant remember what was the clue it might have been the name of a Pharaoh in all 3 languages?
