Because the wild goldfish is gold, so the species was called goldfish. The non-gold colors came later after the fish were bred in ponds for hundreds of years. First came different color variations, then came different finnage and body types. The different looking fish kept the same name of goldfish because they are still the same species, and are still capable of breeding with any other kind of goldfish. Although this is not always probable due to different kinds of goldfish being bigger and/or faster than others, but is can happen because their DNA is still so similar.(like with different races of humans)

"wild" goldfish is not gold. it is silver in color. goldfish is not carp. carp is koi, it is 2 totally different thing. as for the why they call it color gold, because the original goldfish look kind of goldish. yes, it is an orange fish but people name it goldfish because gold is more expensive than orange. it is just a name to make the fish sounds cool.

Geez, Treefrog, we call you treefrog and you clearly aren't one.
But, goldfish came by their name legitimately ... During the Tang Dynasty, it was popular to raise carp in ponds. As the result of a dominant genetic mutation, one of these carp displayed "gold" (actually yellowish orange) rather than silver coloration.

dunno, and who really cares? calm down. I guess, " goldfish " just means not tropical, and not a game fish; salmon, cod, trout.
