Yes, (sigh) Americans did go to the moon, 9 times in fact (there were six landings). The Van Allen belts were not important because it only took a couple of hours (if that) to get through. The total radiation received by the astronauts was about the same as a chest X-Ray.

Yes we really did fly to the Moon. The Van Allen belts are strong enough to be dangerous if you stay in them for many days or longer, but not strong enough if you speed through them in an hour, like Apollo did. Radiation exposure for the crew was only about as much as a medical X-ray.

Check out the Bad Astronomy web site to de-bunk all the "moon hoax" arguments, including this one. The Val Allen belts only give radiation while you are in them. The astronauts passed through them very quickly (about 1 hour). Plus, the walls of the spaceship did provide some radiation protection as well.

Will this ever go away!
As others have said, the amount of radiation in the belts, while higher than other areas, is not so high as to pose a threat unless you stay they for a vacation.
To be safe, however, the Apollo trips when through the best at the equator where the radiation is less.

Astronauts that traveled to the moon spent very little time in the belts and would have received a very small, harmless amount of radiation. Still, NASA says that astronauts who visited the moon would probably have a slightly higher risk of cancer during their lifetimes. So do people who live in Denver.
Yes, we really went to the moon.

You know when Dr. Van Allen was asked about the "lethal" radiation in the VA belt, he said "poppycock"! It would take YEARS of constant exposure to even start to feel ill effects, let alone sickness or death.
(and yes, Dr. Van Allen is still alive).

Wow 6 answers and not one person believes we didn't go to the moon! Maybe we are finally getting through to these morons who believe that it was all just a hoax. There is no need for me to answer, as the other 6 have already gave it.
