I've been an occasional user (viewing only) since late last year and I'd like to know what the big deal is. As far as I'm concerned, the following areas are absolutely atrocious:

1) Site construction
2) Site interface
3) User-generated content

I find that I only gravitate towards the 3rd party, professionally-generated (and usually illegal!) content.

So what I want to know is, what's the big deal? Have I missed the hey day? Am I too old and boring?! Was it better before the Google aquisition? What's the appeal? YouTube fans please teach me!

Its a laugh!

There are clips on there that are meant to be funny.
There are clips that are hilarious.
there are clips that are totally crap.
There are clips that are so bad they are funny.

YouTube isn't meant to be taken seriously.
The British Government used it to try to get 'street cred' and was slated for it.
If you think its serious then you aint doin it right!

Best Clip?

Ghostly Car Ad!!! Turn the volume up to listen for the spirit voices!

There is loads of stuff on there - alot of it is rubbish though - I dont understand those pointless blogs with people talking about nothing.

I use it for music videos.
Also Im still playing those old consoles (NES,Atari etc) and theres alot of content on that - look up "angry video game nerd" I think that guy is so funny.

What else was there ? oh yeah there is this thing where these kids go to a drive through and rap to the staff at mcdonalds - Called the mcdonalds rap - then someone else did the burger king rap...

So theres loads of stuff on there basically.
So in summary then:
I think alot of it is quite funny.
And its very handy for music if you just wanna listen and not download - also if you wanna see a new video or something.

It was better before MTV & VH1, CVopyright owners of most of the videos/artists, could not reach a deal with Google, so they made Google, owners of YouTube pull all Copy Right Videos, soon there will only be home made videos on You Tube

Hun, I am right there with you. I don't understand the big deal with things like YouTube or MySpace. The only reason I even have a MySpace page is that it makes it easier to talk to my friends who have moved out of state. Like everything in our culture as of lately we love to make a big deal out of nothing and ignore the things that are a huge deal and could really impact our lives. There is a small child in me that is weeping for my generation.

your right about one thing for sure it was a lot better before Google got their grubby little mits all over it that's for sure. so yes the hey day has almost all but gone their was a time that i had loads of video's before they were pretty much wiped out due to copy right infringment. now youtube is pretty bland the problem is it became to big a bit like napster!.
well thats my appioion anyway.

Old music videos for me... occasional football clips I missed... and then you get drawn in to stuff that you'd forgotten about which is suggested as similar viewing, or new stuff that looks good.

well im a real newbie to you tube, my daughter showed me! (im 50) and suddenly i can review the concerts i went to when i was a kid... led zeppelin and deep purple, emmerson lake and palmer, genesis, hawkwind... and the list goes on...

as with everything with total public access you have to learn to be a bit selective because its going to be badly done and have questionable content, but its also chock full of little gems...

Youtube is racist, sexist, and every other 'ist' their is - the moderators are crap and allow all kinds of **** heads to post stuff, no matter what the consequence!!I hate it and i've complained repeatedly about some of the racial abuse but no one listens!!! Whatever happened to political correctness? Nowadays it's all about 'free speech' no matter what the repercussion!I'm going to start a petition to get it banned!!!I'm so mad right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've only used it a short time myself, but anything that you can think of, type it into the search and someone somewhere has made a video on it. sad I know
