As in when are there less tourists, so one can get a feel for what the Russian life is like minus all the annoying tourists? I am particularly interested in visiting St. Petersburg, Minsk,& Vladivostok. Perhaps Moscow, but I've heard people are not as pleasant there. Hopefully, I could time it so to as meet Valery Gergiev, that would be pretty neat! All answers are welcomed and thanks for your time!

Winter is probably the best time, because a lot of people do not like the cold. But that might be a reason for why you might not want to go. On a good winter, it can get to be -20 degrees Celsius on average. I would say sometimes in the late fall or early spring would be best.

Best Time To Visit Russia

Late spring and early fall are good weather wise. I would also recommend late December - early January. It's pretty cold, but all cities have holiday decorations and if it snows, it's quite beautiful. St. Petersburg is also famous for its "white nights" in late June, but if you want to avoid tourists, it's not good time to go (although it's very beautiful - passing by open bridges in twilight at 2 a.m.)

I have never been to Vladivostok, but I have a feeling that climate there is quite different from the European part, so you better check with locals. Definitely, there won't be that many tourists there.

Minsk is in Belarus, which is a different country now.

Gergiev travels a lot, so you might have a good chance of meeting him, let's say, in Paris.

Hello!
I am living in St.Petersburg. I would say any time of year is worth to visit this city. In the winter it could be cold, but usually if it's very cold (-20C) it is a very good weather. All people goes to the nearest suburbs, to Finnish Gulf to have a fun on a nature.
But the most beautiful time is from May to July, where so called "wight nights" takes place. It means, that there is no night at all. The sun goes down only for a half an hour. In the night you can watch how the drawbridges of St.Petersburg go up letting ships to the Ladoga-lake and back. But you are right there are a lot of tourists during this time.

I went late August, first week of September this last year and it was great. Spent most of my time in St Petersburg. I really recommend this time of year. Not many tourists and the weather wasn't too hot, wasn't too cold. Light fleece was more than enough most days and a couple days I did tshirts. Great place to visit. Want to go back again. Whatever you do don't miss the Russian State museum. Beautiful. It's often overshadowed by the Hermitage but totally worth it. Well have fun.

ps. Moscow wasn't as fun, but standing in Red Square was a pretty amazing feeling.

i'd say the winter, its too cold to have many toursits around, but it is just gorgeous!! walking dowtown at night, all the architecture is covered in snow, all the buildings have lights from the underneath the roof, so the snow glows and everything is just breathtaking. i loved winter time, it is for sure cold cold cold! so dress warm! a sweatshirt won't do. By the way, I'm talking about St. Petersburg, sorry forgot to mention that above, I was born and raised in that city, i love it, its beautiful. definatley worth going. if you go in the summer time, beware city seems polluted hard to breathe, but it is still gorgeous. :) Fall in St. Petersburg caused a lot of famous poets (Pushkin) to write stories and poems about it, its beautiful with the falling leaves etc.. but it rains a lot, dont' forget an umbrella!

If you like snow and not a whole lot of tourists you should try January , February , December.
If you like hot weather try June, July, August
If you like to collect flowers and mushrooms try March , April , May
And the last but not least if you like rain try September, October. (November is kind of like winter).
But dont go in summer to Moscow: too hot.

You should go during the summer time in Russia. It's too cold when it's winter, but overall the summer time is milder. If you go, you should stay in European Russia. It's got the best cities there.Don't forget to go hiking a little too!

If you like cold weather, go in January or February (for Central Russia). If you prefer warm and sunny weather, go some time between May and September.
