Viable stem cells can be retrieved from the umbilical cord of all full term births. Why can't they just harvest stem cells automatically from the cords right after birth? Why does abortion have to be considered the only way.. It seems so useless that people would bog the issue by tieing it only to the abortion issue.

This is a loaded question without many of the facts. There are in fact many types of stem cell research going on at this very moment. There are adult stem cells and non embryonic stem cell research which have garnered quite a bit of success and is currently funded by the government. Then there is Embryonic stem cell research that is going on which has been quite a disappointment to researchers and the government does not fund it.

I'm an adult white female and I support stem cell research. But I must tell you that I am biased. My son is a T-12 Asia A Paraplegic Complete. He belongs to the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Therefore, I am a staunch supporter. If everyone had a son in the shape that mine is, they also would be supporters.

white male teen: Why can't we use stem cell research especially if it is with stem cells that weren't being used to create life anyways. More lives can be saved if do research it. The catholic church needs to allow some progession. Remember that little person named Galileo who was put under house arrest fro not believing the earth was flat and it was the center of the universe

Absolutely for it.
Adult, White, Male.
Stem cell research is important for medical reasons. It could be the potential treatment and cure for several hundred conditions. The ignorant thought of it being "murder" is ludicrous. Not everyone, even if the majority, of Americans are bible thumpers who believe it is murder. They must learn to respect the thoughts and opinions of others. If they don't want their stem cells worked on, then don't donate them or accept treatment from them. Its that simple. Joe Witnesses won't accept blood transfusions yet we allow that to happen.
Its simply ignorance and inability to follow reason when it comes to issues like this.

I am a white male, and 14 years old. I'm all for the curing effects of stem cell research, but to do it embryos are generally used, which is murder, as is abortion. But, there is emerging research that it can be done minus the embryos . . .

hi,im female white, with multiple sclerosis.over 40 and after researching the subject. i am for stem cell research
The status of the human embryo and human embryonic stem cell research is a controversial issue as, with the present state of technology, the creation of a human embryonic stem cell line requires the destruction of a human embryo. Stem cell debates have motivated and reinvigorated the ‘pro-life’ movement whose members have concerned themselves with the rights and status of the embryo as an early-aged human life. They believe that embryonic stem cell research instrumentalizes and violates the sanctity of life and constitutes murder [1]. The fundamental assertion of those who oppose embryonic stem cell research is the belief that human life is inviolable, combined with the opinion that human life begins when a sperm cell fertilizes an egg cell to form a single cell.
Most stem cell researchers use embryos that were created but not used in in vitro fertility treatments to derive new stem cell lines. Most of these embryos are slated to be destroyed, or stored indefinitely. In the United States alone, there have been estimates of at least 400,000 such embryos.[2] This has led some opponents of abortion, such as Senator Orrin Hatch, to support human embryonic stem cell research.[3]
Medical researchers widely submit that stem cell research has the potential to dramatically alter approaches to understanding and treating diseases, and to alleviate suffering. In the future, most medical researchers anticipate being able to use technologies derived from stem cell research to treat a variety of diseases and impairments. Spinal cord injuries and Parkinson's disease are two examples that have been championed by high-profile media personalities (i.e. Christopher Reeve and Michael J. Fox). The anticipated medical benefits of stem cell research have added a certain amount of emotion and urgency to the debates, which has been exploited by proponents of embryonic stem cell research.
Recently, researchers at Advanced Cell Technology of Worcester, Mass., succeeded in obtaining stem cells from mouse embryos without killing them (see "[Lanza] technique", below). [1] If this technique and its reliability are improved, it would alleviate many of the ethical problems related to embryonic stem cell research.
