Its uncivilized ,barbaric and makes our government not only no better ,but worse than the murderer .With our unjust corrupt system of justice a defendant rarely has a fair opportunity to prove their innocence .The more than 200 innocent people on death row we were going to execute and DNA test proved their innocence is proof of that .As long as their are human elements involved their are flaws and mistakes
and there should be no chance of innocent people being executed or we are the murderers .Who accepts responsibility for the innocent people we executed before DNA tests.Should prosecutors and police who wrongly convicted those 200 innocent people be tried for murder ?

If you really want to do a significant poll on this, the question should be whether people prefer the death penalty or life without the possibility of parole as the most severe punishment. That is the question that must be asked now, since 48 states now have life without parole on the books. It means what it says, and is not a picnic, and Americans are finding out that there are alternatives to the eye for an eye mentality.
According to a Gallup Poll, in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole.

Very much against it.
Adult, White, Male.
If you are for capital punishment then when your child kills someone then make sure your still for it and they die quickly.
Eye for an eye is insane, if that is the way you think then all americans should be dead for their role in supporting our government. Our governments history has been of killing people who disagree with our form of government.
Secondly, its barbaric. Why not jail people for life when the commit crimes worthy of capital punishment. Where are they going anyways? Isn't it cheaper to house these people the rest of their lives anyway.

I think each case should be handled individually. For instance, if other people saw a person shoot and kill someone else, there is NO DOUBT that he did it. But if there is NO POSITIVE PROOF, only heresay, I think that the accused person should not get death, maybe life in prison for a long, long time.
