The more modern way to define when puberty starts in boys is when the pituitary gland begins secreting luteinizing hormone in significant amounts and the testicles begin to enlarge. But the mean age according to most studies for North American caucasian boys is around 11.

You say 14 in your own question, but this is closer to the age when genital development is nearing completion for the average male, not starting.

Some other things called "secondary sexual characteristics" are after-results of puberty rather than part of it. For instance, some guys don't get chest hair until 20's, 30's, or even 40's or never at all, but obviously this is not part of puberty. Similarly, facial hair is not really a good indicator of puberty, it's an after effect and the age at which one starts shaving doesn't usually have much to do with when he started puberty or when he finished, but rather how fast the hair follicles decided to respond to the hormones over a number of years.

well it depends wat body...you can get an idea with looking at the person. if they have bloode hair or red they will be later then guys wif block hair. it also depends on what their size if. is skinny and average they will come more quicker then over weight people
