Did you try to download the modification to be able to play free downloaded games fromt the Internet?
Doing that process incorrectly can mess up your PSP. Doing the process correctly can even mess up the PSP's ability to play real games. You can be stuck only being able to play games you download from the Internet.

Most likely because it has nothing to save game data on to. Thats just a guess though. The psp comes with a 512 Memory stick to save stuff onto so as long as u have it the games should play.
