no visa is needed for US citizens in any EU countries. if you good cheap hostels check out www.hostelworld.com except in PAris you should stay in the 3 ducks hostel (cheapest drinks in Paris) unless you want wine then it is cheap everywhere. Hostels are the best places to hook up with other travelers and see the sights together. you will notice the same people over and over again from hostel to hostel and train to train. have fun!! For food, go to the grocery stores in the cities and buy bread and cheese and salami and chips and crackers, to save money. it is so worth it!

Hey, sounds like a great trip. I did the same in my youth too! Things have changed greatly, but I certainly would check with each country I planned to visit. AND it depends on which countries you plan to visit. Some still require a Visa with your passport. Only as a suggestion, I would consider getting a tourist permit from each before I left the US.
You didn't state which country you were going to land in, nor the countries you plan to visit. So I can't help you with routes, etc.
Check this web site out for starters:
http://www.europeanhostels.com/fall/
http://www.hosteleurope.com/
Or better yet, just do a search of "European hostels."
I received over a million hits for it.
They want you there! Have fun!

You didn't specify the countries. Some countries require a visa, others don't. For some E.U. countries, like Romania &Bulgaria, you'd still need a visa because the US keeps requiring visas for nationals of those countries to visit the US (This is called "diplomatic reciprocity"). Check on the State Department website.

As with ANY citizen of ANY country, you need a passport to enter their territorial lands. Being American means NOTHING to other countries, and their border officers, nor does it allow for immediate passage through ports of other countries.
