"Mardi Gras" is Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras is celebrated the day before Lent starts. Lent is a time to fast, and so Mardi Gras is celebrated to eat up before the big fast!

In French Mardi (Tuesday) Gras (Fat) is the time before Lent. During Lent Catholics are supposed to be forbidden to eat any sort of fatty foods. So on Mardi Gras they eat all kinds of bad food before they have to give it up.

"Fat Tuesday" may have been a time to fatten up and do all the things you cant do for awhile, but i think it has just become a time for people to get drunk, stupid and naked. I bet most of the people at Mardi Gras dont even celebrate the religion it stems from (Roman Catholic).
