I was thinking about this the other day. Why does it seem that something happened to all of the knowledge and understanding that these civilizations had? Why does it seem that they were on some whole other level of universal, spiritual, and conscious understanding than the humans of today? Could it be because we are focused on different things or rather that we hold different things as important to us? They seemed so in touch with the universe, the spiritual world, and with who they were within both of these realms and we seem to be creating more and more gadgets and institutions that take us away from that. What do you all think?

I would have to agree that whoever had the better weapons usually destroyed the more intellectually advanced civilizations. Although, sometimes it was geographical limitations or natural disasters that destroyed them.

In retrospect however our technology has far exceeded what they accomplished. In terms of harmony with nature - the only thing holding us back is crude oil. In terms of spirituality we're the same. Except I wouldn't like getting my heart torn out with an obsidian blade and my carcass being flung down the side of a steep temple. And I wouldn't like taking part in the rampant homosexuality or the incest among ancient royal families. Think of all the drug use associated with religion. Animal or earth worshipers? I think we've evolved from that.

It's good to learn more of our past but only to be more ambitious and optimistic about our future.

Well, let's see. The Egyptians worshipped death, and they also believed in slavery. Needless to say, those two facts are the primary reasons why Egypt is so small now... Not that I'm running them down, as they also added immensely to our medical knowledge.

I can attribute the Mayans' lack of success to one word: Conquest. Once the Spaniards showed up, they were done for. Check out South American history for that one. Or was that the Incan Empire? I get the mixed up... Either way, the Spanish sure left a mark...

The victor writes history. They lost.
Also, the Mayan idealogy (human sacrifices, cults of the blood, etc) is alien to the West amd was stamped out (they were mostly gone by the time Spain got there anyway. No one knows quite why they disappeared.) The Egyptians, on the other hand, have made enormous contributions to our civilization, indirectly, by influencing the Greeks and Romans.

The human thought process is constantly evolving. Therefore, the spiritual knowledge of the acient peoples are still with us today, but it changed with time.
Newer spiritual thoughts are among us. The new book "Another Thought" by OC Tross is a good example of acient thoughts fused with modern spiritual thoughts.
