welcome to the world of being in a rock band. Too many ego problems already and you're still in school
Here's the deal, the tension will always be there in a band, to at least a small point. Just talk out all the problems and remember to have fun. Don't blackmail, that's stupid. Just say "hey dude, I'm sorry, now let's rock and get some chicks!"

Jeeeze! Ur rite- I think it cud be u guys r screwed, as u say...I remember the 1st coupla bands I was in back in the 10th, 11th, &12th grades...Depends on how much time u have til ur obligation/comittment..If u have enuff time, u cud look 4 another player (or 2), while trying 2 talk the other guy into honoring ur joint obligation. I wouldn't blackmail him, but u cud mention 2 him that that option HAD crossed ur mind...in one of my aforementioned early bands, we took on another member 2 give us enuff songs 2 do our 1st job. (Otherwise, we would have had 2 repeat songs, & we didn't wanna do that more than once or twice unless requested to - I think we did repeat a couple of our best tunes by SAYING we had a special request 2 play 'em again...I don't think we really did. But it bought us time, & we had enuff songs to do the 4 sets we had 2 do 4 our 1st job.. If u fail at both of these options, or there's not enuff time, I'd just go to the person u contracted the job/show/appearance with & tell him/her the problem honestly, apoligize, & hopefully suggest a replacement group, if u know of one. (If u can talk 2 the spokeperson(s) of a couple of other bands B4 u cancel, u may find urself in the agent/middleman buisness.) Either way, u know the problem, & it's not the 1st time this sort of thing has happened, but be creative, do all u can, pray about it, & then HANDLE IT! (Of course u cud lie 2 the person, & claim someone was sick, or had been injured, or went nuts & had entered "rehab' or somethin, but I think u should try the 1st 2 suggestions I mentioned 1st. It's better in the long run 2 be honest w/people even tho it mite b embarressing 4 u to do that. (While the guilt trip idea is ok to try, It should be enuff of a pressure 4 ur member that's gotten "cold feet" 2 change his mind, but it cud be, he's not as good as u thot & he knows it. In that case, u dont wanna be on the stage w/him either. Try 2 find another guy or girl or both that are on ur level & that will ADD to ur sound as well as ur repretoir(sp.?) Good luck!

Tell him you're really sorry. That this really means a lot to you, ask him if you can put this in the past. Do NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES Blackmail anybody . This will only make matters worse. Maybe you just need to set down and talk this over. Get someone both of you trust to be with you not a lose friend. Work this out . Good luck
Who knows you guys could be the next greatest band in history.

I would hope that you can find a way to work this out without blackmailing someone... maybe you could talk to him about the fight... if you can't even remember what it is about maybe he still feels strongly about what happened.. if you know what the problem was then you have a chance of solving it.. and maybe getting him to come back

dude you should try to sweet talk him tell him that he can get the guitar solo or something like that. dont blackmail him that would only make matters worst. making him feel guilty is not another way to go if he doesnt want to do it talk to the deans and see what else you can do. dont hurt someones feelings if they dont want to do it.

obviously hes not participating cuz he wants to show you up. remind him, in an un offensive tone, that if he doesnt play with you, he will look just as bad, since his name is on the list. and if he doesnt do anything, good luck trying to find a new guitarist. and i mean that friendly, not sarcastic :)

If you blackmail him, he'll mess up your gig beyond recognition - that's what I'd do. Make up with him & ask him nicely to join you.
