When those arguing against a change appeal to tradition, exactly what tradition are they appealing to? Isn't 'redskin' as offensive as the N word?

Hmmm....maybe society would be better off if we stop being so protective of everything. Why don't we stop playing the race card with everything? Two black coaches in the Super Bowl, great for them, but don't rub it in the nation's face every other chance. Nascar celebrates black history month, another job well done, but why are they using that to attract that community. I haven't seen Mexicans complain about the lack of their people in football coaching positions and in Nascar. I don't hear Asians setting up groups to protest the NFL for lack of Asian players and MLS for not hiring more Asian coaches. To better society we should accept what is out there, not baby everything down to try to make a better and safer place. It is not racist, they do not show hatred towards Native Americans in any way, shape, or form. They actually promote a lost community in this world. They help give the youth a chance to learn and understand something that was taken over. Quit being a pessimistic person and expand your mind. Open to the passion of finding humor in being called a cracker, a borderhopper, the N word, a chink, and all sorts of other racial slurs. When the day comes that neither of those names actually bother someone then society will work.

Being of 1/8 American Indian blood and coming from a family rich in Indian tradition I don't believe it is racist. Neither does any other Indian I know. It is racist in no way, Redskin is the same thing as calling an African-American black and if you think that is wrong too then you are entirely too PC and you just need to let it go. I'm proud that the Redskins have kept their name for so long. I would be even more proud if they would have a good season once in a while.

Maybe they can rename the team the pale faces. Then people will complain. Yeah it is offensive to use the term Redskin and yeah they should drop it.
Oh Austin Redskin IS a RACIST TERM. It isn't like naming the team after a tribe. This isn't about getting rid of a name like the Chiefs, which use the Indian view BUT wasn't based on Indian actually.

I think Redskins are a name to be proud of. Sports teams are intended to be named strong, warrior type names. So Redskins is actually a compliment. It says, we want to be like those tough, warrior, fearless people who faught hard for their land. That's what a Redskin is. Redskins, in my opinion isn't a put down, it is synonymous with strong, fearless and tough. Why would anyone be offended by being called Redskins? The "N-word" is a derivitive of *****, Redskins isn't a derivitive of anything... The only logical comparison is if the team were the "Reddies...". Anyway, I don't think it's time to change the name...

I am sick and tired of the "oversensitivity" to PC in recent years. The Redskins have been in existence since before WW II in DC. Pro sports and mascots are "entertainment", not politics or issues that effect our paychecks. I'm sure there are plenty of "Native Americans" out there who are Skins fans because of their "tradition and players" and the nickname has nothing to do with it.

This whole thing just got darn ridiculous! The team names are an ode, or a compliment, to the Native Americans. Why does everyone have to jump on the bandwagon of a misunderstanding.
The Native peoples were simply saying that they didn't like the crowds chanting sacred Native chants and using "the chop".

The only reason that Native Americans would have to be offended is that the Redskins are a bad team.

Lets change it to the bloody scalper heathens of the plains! But in all seriousness there are a lot more important things to worry about than football mascots. I mean all cowboys should be offended by a team having T.O. on the roster!

Where you part of the "crack" team that replaced "The Bullets" with "The Wizards"? What was the reasoning behind that? Wasn't it something like the word bullets promotes violence? Well how is the crime rate in Washington DC now? Do you and the other "Wizards" have any other bright ideas?

Perhaps they should just change the color since Washington D.C. is 90% Black.

Come on, stop the nonsense, someone is always going to be offended in some way no matter what you name it.
