Turtles, tortoises, and Terrapins are all in the reptile family, though they do not look like they are. They have scaly skin, breathe air, lay their eggs on land, and are cold blooded(ectothermic). The only difference is that they spend most of their time in the water and they have a hard bony shell developed from their ribs. (There are other differences, if you want to research them)They are one of the oldest reptiles, a lot older than snakes or lizards. Good luck on your assignment! Hope this helps!

Turtles are reptiles because they are air-breathing, cold-blooded animals which reproduce by internal fertilization.
The bones of their skulls are only loosely attached to one another,The lower jaw is composed of two halves and are united at the front. This tends to restrict the size of the meal that can be swallowed. At the back of the oral cavity the tongue is attached. The skin of lizards are generally a hard horny substance that is folded together to make various types of scales. Scales have many purposes. Sometimes they are used as a way to absorb solar energy and warm up quicker. Other times they are used as armor or sexual display with many a bizarre crest or spines. And of course they differ from amphibians in that the scales prevent water loss.

The typical lizard has four appendages with 5 toes on each. They may be many different shapes. Lizards and their ancestors have been around for a very long time. The reason appears to be because of their adaptiveness. (they are able to to adjust themselves to to different conditions, and environments).

Turtles are reptiles because they have scales, need to regulate their body tempurature by outside forces(i.e. the sun, a warm rock, etc.), they lay eggs, dont typically care for young, and I dont know why else... I'm a bad person, I know its a reptile but I dont ask why, I just accept it...

Chelonia (turtles and tortoises) are reptiles as they are ectotherms ( control body temp through surroundings) lack hair (instead have scales) lay eggs (oviparity) and provide no further care for young after laying the eggs. www.chelonia.org has lots of info on many different species.. although most is intended to be information for raising them as pets.
