Technically, that parties to the Korean War never signed a peace treaty. They agreed to an armistice which means that they agreed to cease hostilities with set boundary lines for both North and South Korea.

You have it completely wrong. It was just one Korea before. That is in the beginning. What you really want to know is how it became 2. The Koreans (not Americans - get that) decided on a communist regime and the Americans ( who are scared that this form of life will catch on in the US decided on a war to flush out the Communist (Chinese backed) forces. And since no one actually won that war, the country stayed in 2 parts. Communist North and American south.
