We have an oranda with an over grown head and while it eats and is in a tank where it doesn't ge picked on much, all it does is hang out in the corner of the tank and when it occassionally ventures out it bumps into EVERYTHING! It obviously can't see. It's fins are getting tattered and I don't know what to do with it! It's about four - five inches long.

I have read articles on trimming oranda's wens (the bubble growth on the head) but have never done it myself. I would be scared to death to even try! I think if it ever came to that, I would seek the advice from an expert at a good fish store and see if they could provide a reference of a person who has done it so they could either do it for me, or so that I could at least have an in-depth discussion as to how to do it. Also, fish vets are rare, but they do exist and, if you can find one in your area, you could have them do it. It's scary, but it does need to be done or, eventually, the fish will be blinded and that's less fair and more cruel than whatever short-term pain they might feel during the trimming process. Oh, and, I myself would probably use rounded-end scissors to avoid stabbing the fish or poking its eye out! Good luck!
