Carbon Dioxide is known as a greenhouse gas. It traps heat. Increased levels of it will mean the Earth will hold more heat in the air which may contribute to global warming.

Look at Venus. It has a lot of carbon to absorb and hold in heat and its surface temp is like 900F. A atmosphere on a planet is like a blanket. Nitrogen may be like a sheet, but carbon is a heavy wool blanket.
