Watergate Scandal!

2007-02-26 11:47:28 · answer #1 · answered by Trapped in a Box 6 · 0 5

Nixon left office to avoid the shame of impeachment, along with the damage that he felt this would do to both the country...and the Republican Party.

If you go back and take a look at any of the books that were released shortly thereafter...The Final Days being a good one...Nixon tried to tough it out, hoping that the Republican's in the House would be able to block his impeachment and, if not, that the Republican's in the Senate would be able to block his ouster. He gave it up when they came to him and told him that it was over.

In terms of charges, there were tape recordings from the Oval Office indicating that Nixon knew of the Watergate breakin and was actively involved in attempting to cover it up.

The Watergate Scandal.

The term Watergate scandal refers to a 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. by members of the Richard Nixon administration and the resulting cover-up which led to the resignation of the President. The burglars' aim was to plant listening devices, while disguised as common criminals to provide cover. They were informally called the "plumbers unit" to "plug leaks," and included former members of the CIA. Though then-President Nixon had endured two years of mounting political embarrassments, the court-ordered release in August, 1974, of a "smoking gun tape" about the burglaries brought with it the prospect of certain impeachment for Nixon; he resigned only four days later on August 9, making him the only U.S. President to have resigned from office.

Nixon resigned when it came to light that he was about to be impeached for covering up a Republican sponsored Burglary into the Democratic National Committee Head quarters at the Watergate Hotel in 1972.

My guess, it was the smell of pending impeachment proceedings in his nostrils. President Nixon resigned his office under considerable pressure from many fronts. Don't believe the honorable bullcrap, Nixon defied everyone right up to the end, he thought he was above the law. He once stood in front of America and said something to this effect, Americans need to know if their President is a crook, and I'm not a crook. He was, he had a million dollar slush fund to pay for silence.

Politics, he got caught up in lying about some political dirty tricks. If he had been truthful it probably would not have gotten him into that much trouble, like when Clinton lied about having sex. If Clinton had fessed up he would not have had so much trouble and Gore might of had a chance of getting elected. Dems elect Republican Presidents you know. One responder said Vietnam. I lived through that and was an idiot marching in the street and hey guess what? Nixon ended the Vietnam War, Kennedy started it and Johnson made it huge. Nixon ended it by hard negotiating. There is some popular myth that liberals love that Nixon was the villian during the Vietnam War. He allowed the Generals to fight and bombers to bomb and North Vietnam negotiated a peace. The offense was called Operation Linebacker and it probably saved my sorry Democratic keister. Not until then did they move at the peace talks. Kennedy and Johnson had us there for ten years without doing much and Nixon, prick that he was, ended it. No matter how much pie eyed libs want to believe it, the Vietnam War was a Demoractic Party exercise. Sort of like the War In Iraq, which a Democratic Congressional Majority voted to go to war and just recently decided that it was a bad idea. Wonder what changed? The War? Nope. There is an election coming and so its time to make nonreaders sit up and bark slogans and forget that the Democratic leadership, then pandering to the hysteria, authorized little Bush to go to war. Politics is ugly, political people are blind and stupid. How come no one is calling for Hillary's impeachment, or Biden or Rockefeller or any number of Dem Sens and Congressmen. roof roof, its election down sit up and bark.

Mr. Nixon was "setup" by the RNC/Texas Oil Cartel. His ability to stand up to them was the reason he was put in a position of vulnerability. Mr. Nixon resigned his office out of respect for the office and the people of the United States.

The real criminals were Cheney/Rumsfeld, The Texas Oil Cartel and the RNC.

Since Mr Nixon's end, we have seen the RNC warp our constitution and even the opinions of their members. Deceit and shady dealings are the controllers of this party now.

He helped plan the break-in/theft at the Democratic offices in the Watergate building and was afraid the impeachment process would force him to leave office, so he resigned.
