Far too many varirables here. Tires, gearing, load, driver...these all have a major impact on what a vehicle can do. I would put my money on the Jeep, even though it has been hacked apart to have a 4 cylinder. Not to sound biased or anything, but the men and women at Jeep know a thing or two about offroading. They've been building offroad vehicles for over 50 years at that point. Ford has been trying to appeal more to the soccer mom. The Jeep is more capable off road for sure, but only as capable as the driver.

I would put my money on the Explorer. I own a 98 and it is awesome. :)
