I have a HP Pavillion DV6000 laptop with Windows XP Media Center edition. I hard reset the computer during a boot and now it won't start. I get the "Safe Mode, Normal Config, Last known good Config" screen, but none of the options work. The computer goes through the animated Windows XP Screen, but then flashes a nanosecond of blue screen of death with mysterious type and reboots to the BIOS screen and then to the "Safe Mode, Normal Config, Last known good Config" screen.

Linux and Quickplay boot fine, and I took the BIOS to the default config.

Do I have to reformat, or is there something I can do?

Thanks!

I would try a "Repair Install"
Do not format or you will lose all your data.

Repair install. (should not lose data)

Per:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

"How do you perform a reinstallation of Windows XP, sometimes called a repair installation?

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1. When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

2. Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3. Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4. In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup. "

If you have the System Restore CD's, there are two options with them, and once you put the first CD in the drive it should bring you to an options, either a complete full recovery, or just a recovery to the state the computer was in when built at the factory, only the programs that came pre-installed will be reloaded, you will have to reload anything you added since you bought it.

Or try this, borrow a computer, go to www.hp.com, in the serch box eneter your computer model number, after you load that look for Online Live Chat with an HP Tech, click on that link, a s,all live chat window will open, and ask his advice, I know the free Chat Tech support is available at hp.Com, I have used it several times, and they also e-mail you a complete copy of the chat in an e-mail when you finish.

Might be the boot, ini got pooched. Try a boot disk from bootdisk.com or something. I think in XP is also a Restore Mode, F10 or something, but try the boot.ini first.
