There are several things you can do to promote healthy sleep. Which, by the way, should be at least 7 hours per night.
1. Excercise vigorously at some point during the day. There are several reasons that this works, mainly by reducing overall stress level. However, you should avoid strenuous excercise within two hours of bed time.
2. Do not eat heavy food or drink alcohol before bed. Cut off food 2-3 hours before bedtime and only a small, light snack if necessary.
3. A really hot bath right before bed will help you fall asleep. As your body cools, it promotes relaxation.
4. 5-HTP is a supplement that is often used to aid in healthy sleep. It is a type of amino acid that promotes serotonin in the brain. This will help you to relax and sleep better. I recommend 100-200 mg before bed. Results with 5HTP have been very positive in individuals with insomnia.
5. Valerian is another natural herb that helps promote sleep.
6. Melatonin is a natural sleep aid.
7. Your bedroom is for sleep and lovemaking ONLY! Do not read, watch tv, or do anything else in bed.
.
8. Wake up at the same time every morning. This will you to create a sarcadian rhythm and maintain it.
9. Lastly, I would recommend the CD by Sonicaide entitled "Music to promote sleep". Years of research aided this company to create music that helps to ease your brain into the various stages of sleep. I have this CD on my IPod and will sometimes put this on when I first lie down and I sometimes wake up the next morning without having moved and my earbuds still in my ears!
Good luck to you! I hope you sleep well tonight!

You can try the counting sheep thing, or "clear your mind," or read something reeeally boring. It is advised that you shouldn't watch TV or be on the computer at least half an hour before you go to bed, because it will trick your mind and make you think it's still daytime, or something along those lines. Warm milk has the effect of making some people sleepy, though I can't quite recall why..

Go for an extremely long leisurely walk and when you return home put on some slow music and sensually dance to it as you make your bed with clean linen. Then prepare your wardrobe for the next day. Take a warm bath and afterward, brew yourself a cup of Celestial Seasonings "SLEEPYTIME" tea. Then put on your most comfortable nightwear and think about the most calming moment in your life. Empty your bladder and while keeping the pleasurable and calming moment in thought, approach your bed as if it were a bed of soft cotton and enmesh yourself in it. Force yourself to concentrate on nothing but that enjoyable moment. Smell the moment. Feel the moment. Transform yourself back to the moment. Oh, and you might want to set your clock. Goodnight!

Try to adjust your sleeping schedule to about 8 hours of sleep. If you sleep for 4 hours now, try to sleep 4 hours earlier than usual. Do NOT procrastinate your work, it will leave you in a dilemma between lack of sleep and bad work effort.
Reading boring books always works for me.

You may need to relax you brain,,, what I mean by that is you maybe thinking about stuff while you are laying there Tring to sleep. Try to relax and concentrate on your breathing, deep breath in and hold it briefly and exhale slowing don't think of anything else. repeater this reveal times until you fall asleep. It do work.
