Yes, most companies are serious when they set that prerequisite.

And yes, it has been used to keep some potential candidate or employees from applying for certain jobs.

If you have experience in a similar role, emphasize that experience and how it would relate to the new position.

Many job profiles list mandatory and optional requirements. They often couch the requirements with carefully selected modifiers such as "desired" or "highly desirable".

If they come right out and state that a qualification is mandatory, take that at face value. But if they just have a list of qualifications, apply for the job if you meet at least half of the stated qualifications. The more, the better, of course, but I've been accepted for positions where I didn't meet the desired experience level but had greater breadth of experience or more formal training than the competition.

If the position requires highly specialized skills and you have some of them, go ahead and apply even if you don't meet some of the "mandatory" qualifications. They may have problems with finding someone with the experience they desire. You can often work around this with a carefully crafted cover letter. Say something like, "While I realize that I don't have quite the experience that you are looking for, I can offer the following qualifications that clearly show that I'm an excellent candidate for the position..."

I agree - it can get harding trying to break into the work world.

depending on the job you are trying for I am sure you could use some real world experience to count for the work experience.

Another option would be to find a smaller company that may pay a bit less, but that will give you the opportunity.
