wow, a few stupid answers there. A mac IS A PC PERIOD. there is NO difference. Both have intel (excluding AMD pc cpus) cpus, intel motherboard, and near the same parts everywhere else. the ONLY difference is OS and the mac has no bios chip. The mac USE to be the best, but that's when they had powerpc (risc) cpus (twice the speed of a x86 (cisc) cpu). So in graphics they both can have the SAME video card=no difference.
For software as in video editing, macs still has pretty good software, but the pcs also have a good lineup of software now too. And it's 1-2% of the planet uses macs, over 90% using pcs.
If making movies, then macs with the video toasters still reigns.

Mac, only if you can go top of the line equipment. I went from PCto Mac and back to PC. I am involved in animation and graphics. Macs are way too expensive for the regular user. Only real intense artists will use a Mac, because they make a good living at it. You are also limited in software choices with a Mac. A PC is easier to build and add onto. as you become more proficient in your work, It grows with you.

gotta contradict 'vote me' on a few points here:
#1 I'll give it to him, logic is flawed, but basic point is ok.
#2 ditto, basic point but flawed logic.
#3 I disagree with, especially since we are discussing graphics. There are over 140,000 programs (well over, that number is from last year) and there are actually more pro graphics programs for mac than there are for pc.
#4 I disagree completely. The new Macs can run windows, the older macs (since 1993) have been able to run Windoze with a shell program or expansion card, so Macs have been able to run everything, pc's are limited to pc only programs.
#5 Macs actually benchmark faster than pc's.
#6 Pc's are slower and less stable and have less hardware upgrade options. (a recent pcworld article benchmarked a Mac pro with a Dell Precision with same processor speeds and RAM the Dell was slower and had fewer PCI, Firewire and USB expansion ports; the dell was also $1346 more expensive)
#7 vague numbers but close enough
#8 I don't really understand what he's saying. I have a Mac at home that can actually run 3 operating systems at the same time, as well as a 4th OS that must run on it's own, but his answer kind of shoots down his own answers for #'s 3, 4, 6
#9 similar to 8 not sure what point he is trying to get across.
and his parting jab about graphics cards... Gaming doesn't determine the best graphics cards, movie making is a better platform to choose from. Macs come stock with iMovie HD as well as many other professional HD movie capabilities, gaming is VERY consumer end.
the final deciding point is what are you comfortable with using? If you have always used a pc, used Adobe apps for pc, then you should probably go pc. If you are comfortable with a Mac, then DEFINITELY get a Mac, there is nothing better for design.
p.s. if you go pc, do NOT get a laptop, design on a laptop is impossible, color correction & proofing is just not possible... & Toshibas are much better than Dells

I'm going to give you an unbiased opinion. Trust me, I do this for a living.
If you are using a computer for graphic design most definately a mac. Reasons:
The graphics ARE much better on a Mac. The colors are much more vivid and the operating system makes color management much easier.
A Mac is MUCH more easier to use than a PC (When it comes to personal use)
The majority of the graphic design industry uses Macs
The hardware within Macs is high quality in
HOWEVER:
When they brake, Macs are costly to repair and typically you need to take it to apple for the repair. PCs can be fixed anywhere. I'd rather PCs all day than 1 mac.
PCs are much more business friendly. (From an adminstrative standpoint, I hate Macs)
Supported software is much better on PCs but their is, typically, an equivalent package for the mac

Most people that answered before me, have mostly covered the answers, although some were inaccurate or misinformed, or just spreading FUD, such as the first replier. So, I'll just touch on a few things that others have said.
# 1 Mac doesn't get viruses that easily compared to Windows, and that is because Mac is unknown compared to windows. <-----Mac computers running the current generation OS.. OS X has ZERO viruses, and it is not because there are less of them, it is because they are built from the ground up with security. Also, wouldn't a hacker (whatever) want the BRAGGING RIGHTS of finally BREAKING OS X and putting a virus on it. There are countless people that write viruses successfully for PC's (windows based), but WHO R THEY? and who cares.
#3 Mac is limited to softwares
#4 Windows is not limited to softwares <---what on earth is he/ she referring to for 3 and 4?
# 8 Mac uses two OS's at once, windows and Mac OS, and that is because Mac wants more attention by using windows OS <---Macs use one OS at once, but gives you the option/ choice of using two or more OS's, not because they want more attention, but because they want to give YOU options, and more than likely let you see for your self, that OS X is the better choice.......Oh, with Macs being able to run multiple OS's , how does anybody figure that PC's (windows) has more software? There are Mac only software that you can NOT get for Windows based Pc's.
#10 Mac plays games, but very limited, while a PC is best known as entertainment computers, plays games to the max and much more. <----- See reply to #8, and then ask your self, how are macs limmited, I have also seen reports on (windows only) Games that RAN FASTER on a Mac, when running under Boot camp. Even Windows XP and/ or Vista has been shown to run faster on Macs than on PC's (dells, gateways, the windows based PC's) *** not saying that the games and windows will run faster on all macs and be faster than all pc's. just saying that it has been shown. and I believe the magazine was PC mag or PC world
Windows is much better. Get a Vista laptop. I recommend Dell over all computers... End of discussion <----YES! windows is much better, at viruses malware, pop-ups, spyware, etc... Yes, get Vista, if you want an expensive and very poor and crappy wannabe imitation of Leopard. (OS 10.5.x) and it's the end of discussion because the person spreading FUD says it's the end.
Now, on to others...I guess I'll just say this, the whole 90% vs. 10% or whatever figures people use, is pointless. Numbers does not = a better computer/ os. Take cars for example, Ford makes far more cars than let's say Mercedeze and/ or Jaguar, or even the two combined. Now leaving out the cost of the car, which would you rather drive, which would you feel saver in. a Ford Focus (or whatever) or in a Mercedeze or Jag, or bentley or Volvo etc. and like I said, with the new intell chip Macs, you can do far more than on a PC (windows based) PC just means Personal Computer, So, a Mac, a Dell, an HP etc. are all PC's it just that people generally referr to Non Apple computers when they mention PC

Gaming graphics? PCs, the best video for a Mac is Extended AGP 8x, while PCs have up to PCI-Express 16x to choose.
Desktop publishing graphics? Macs.
Web publishing? PCs, gotta go with common denominator here.

# 1 Mac doesn't get viruses that easily compared to Windows, and that is because Mac is unknown compared to windows.
#2 Windows is very vulnerable to virsues and that is because windows gets more attention than Mac. However, would you rob 10% of Pc users to get rich than to rob 90%? That's just a fact there.
Note that windows mean PC.
#3 Mac is limited to softwares
#4 Windows is not limited to softwares
#5 Mac is slower than PC
#6 PC is faster and more advantangeous than Mac
# 7 10% of the world use Mac, while 90% use PC
# 8 Mac uses two OS's at once, windows and Mac OS, and that is because Mac wants more attention by using windows OS
#9 PC only uses one OS, which is Windows, and they're various versions. PC will not run Mac OS, and that is because PC doesn't need Mac OS. Unlike Mac.
#10 Mac plays games, but very limited, while a PC is best known as entertainment computers, plays games to the max and much more.
You decide which one you refer now.
P.S. Anybody who said Mac has a better GPU ( Graphic Card) doesn't know crap about computer... PC has the best and most advance GPU over Mac by far, and that is because Windows needs the best Graphic card to play games. like Mac, they're no good on playing games, so how would they have the best GPU?
Windows is much better. Get a Vista laptop. I recommend Dell over all computers... End of discussion

Don't get a laptop for graphics power desktops are much more powerful in that department. But I would go with a pc first, especially if you play games. If you know anything about computers don't buy a Dell either or an E-machines or Gateway. Build it to suit yourself at this link.
