As long as your trans is shifting into over drive and the converter is locking up then new gears is the only answer. Good Luck.

If your rear end is truly a 3:42 and your screaming 5,500 at 70 mph. You are stuck in third gear or the fourth gear overdrive is switched off. My S-10 4.2 V6 3000 with 3:90 gears only turns 3000 at 70 in high gear. "Sumpthins" up man. I'd get your trans. looked at and double check your VIN code yith your Chevy dealer they will tell you what rear end you actually have. You should never run a turbo under positive boost pressure in high gear. thus no gears under 3:42's. Otherwise you'll loose the efficency of the turbo. You should be feeding it the highest octane gas so your knock sensor keeps the ignition advance ahead or with regular fuel you eventially may burn a piston or crisp a valve.

Either there is something wrong with the transmission or your speedometer gearing in the TH350 is not right. This combination with the 3.42 gears should be around 3000 RPM at 70 (maybe a little more). I would make sure the transmission is shiftiing into third and not slipping.

Sounds like you have closer to a 4:11 gear ratio for a 5500rpm at 70mph. I had a '67 Olds 442 with 3:42 ratio that turned 2800 at 60mph and got good gas mileage with the 400cu.in. and 350 hp, 4 speed. To check ratio, raise rear end. Make a seeable mark on tire and drive shaft. Turn tire one time and count how many times drive shaft turns. That will approximate close to ratio. 3 shaft to 1 tire turn would be 3:00, 4 shaft turns to 1 tire turn=4:00. Approximate the partial turns of shaft for closer idea of true ratio with 1/2 turn=.50~3-1/2 turns=3:50, etc. 4:11 would make about 4-1/10th turns of shaft.

Your tranny is slipping, or in 2nd gear, or the converter isn't stalled up. What is your torque converter stall speed?

I've got 3.90 gears and a TH-350, 3200 flash stall, and I'm turning about 4000 RPM at 80 MPH.
