How do you view preschool teachers in relation to the rest of the teaching world? Do you consider them an equal to the teachers you send your children to in ele, middle, and high school? Or do you see them as babysitters while you work? Also, what do you think about someone that has been a preschool teacher their whole life? Did they waste their teaching degree by being in preschool? Or should they be rewarded for their patience?

Think of it this way, you get kids when they are at their highest absorption of knowledge. You can mold them easier than any other teacher in their future can. To me, that is so cool, to be able to effect so many kids on such an important level. Our society doesn't give teachers the credit that they deserve. So if you are being viewed as less than, it is not you, it is others who are less than for not realizing what a large impact you have on the future.

I disagree that upper level teachers need more qualifications.

Preschool teachers should be just as qualified as any other teacher... but differently qualified too. You don't want anyone off the streets working iwth your 3 year olds.

Preschool still holds a stigma of babysitting and lay people often don't acknowledge it as a career, and it is very unfortunate. The low value placed on this job is also reflected in the lower wages of preschool teachers v. kindergarten teachers. But the field is changing, and you can be a part of that change. It is gaining more respect, but it will only continue to do so if intelligent professionals advocate and pioneer for their careers.

You are the most important teacher in a student's lif!e. You are the one who will build the foundation on which they base all their learning. You will teach them the basics in math and reading. Even though it doesn't seem like it. The next time they see that particular concept you taught they will have something to build upon. That is the main reason I chose early childhood as my degree. Build their future......
