I want to be a ballet dancer, but I'm not sure if I'm the right measurements. I'm 6'2 and weigh 184. I was just wondering what the average male ballet dancer weighs and his height. also, I wanted to know how easy is it to transition from ballet to other forms of dance. my school is doing a musical where jazz dance is in it and I have never taken a jazz dance lesson in my life (they're going to give us some lessons). i just wanted to know if my ballet experiance will help at all and how easy it would be to transition.

Ballet is the foundation for jazz and modern dance. So if you had already been taking it, you would have found that it would be much easier to learn the jazz steps even if you had never studied jazz. And then taking ANY dance class helps you to learn how to pick up steps from a choreographer.

All shapes and sizes of people are welcome to study ballet. If your question concerned whether you could be professional, the fact of the matter is that doors open for male dancers because they are in short supply. By all means, study ballet! The dance world needs you!

Your measurements are fine. Most girls in ballet when they dance on pointe gain 3 to 4 inches in height from being on the tips of their toes, so being 6-2 will benefit you when doing finger-turns and promennades. As for transitioning, ballet is a good base for all kinds of dance, but that doesn't mean taking a jazz class or two is unnecessary. You might also find a jazz or hip hop class a good break from the rigors of ballet.

I think your measurements are fine (but I'm a girl, so what do I know?)....... Ballet helps you with absolutely every other type of dance. Your ballet training will help a lot with your school musical, the only thing you might have to worry about is learning how to let go a bit more than you would in ballet. Good luck!
