In my lodge, the story of Hiram Abif is taught as a legend from which many symbols are taken to pass along the ideals of Freemasonry. Of course it is based on the actual building of King Solomon's Temple, but as there is no historical record of Hiram Abif, it is counted as a legend.

If you are more interested in the subject, and want to know if there is any historical basis for the character Hiram Abif, you may want to read the book "The Hiram Key". I cannot vouch for whether or not the conclusions of the authors are true, but it certainly provides an interesting take on the craft.
