Specifically, what would an online New York Times article fall under when researching?

It would help to know the motivation behind asking this question. My best guess is that you are trying to meet some paper writing requirements for referencing. A New York Times article is not a journal artice. A journal article is a scholarly piece published in a scholarly journal.

An "institutional Web site" could be all sorts of things (theoretically it could be nytimes.com, but I doubt that works here). It could be the site of a non-governmental organization or a corporation.

I'd say neither. It's a periodical, but it's journalism, not a scholarly journal. An institutional website would be the official website of an institution of research, whether a university or independent.

That's not to say that newspapers can't be used as well for research--sometimes necessary even--but that depends entirely on the field and subject of your research.

Online journal article.

If you are using APA citations you would use daily newspapers articles, electronic version reference number 89 in the APA book.

Institutional website would be for example Department of Education or a University website
