This is a dangerous precedent - today Wal-Mart, tomorrow ?? Starbucks? Barnes and Noble? McDonald's?

Restriction of commerce based on personal prejudice is a slippery slope. It is another form of censorship and control by government.

A better argument would be the displacement of citizens, who have lived in the area for many years and contributed to the culture and "flavor" of the neighborhood. If Wal-Mart were to provide "equal or better" housing for the residents and partner with some of the merchants, then the opposition may not be as fierce.
