try a new oil pressure switch, my grand am does the same thing except the light doesn't come on, sometimes driving down the road my light will come on saying check gauges and the oil light will flash and you look at the gauge and there is 40 lbs. of pressure.

Sometimes, but not rarely an oil pump will start to fail and go bad, but hopefully that is not the case here.
I would pour one quart of transmission fluid in your oil case and run it for a couple of hours and then change the oil and put a new filter and oil change in the works.
The trans fluid will eat up all the film deposits and help free up the screen on the oil pump./ It also cleans your lifetrs and valves...cool eh!!
If you have a rear main leak it also stops that too oif you have a rubber seal. All of these are tricks of the trade.

We don't have enough info however it would be wise to have the pressure tested mechanically. There is a test gauge set up out that will give you a true reading. Some gauges get old and don't read accurately. Don't take any chances, engine swaps are very costly. Good Luck. P.S. If you don't know of a shop you feel you can trust call your local Better Business Bureau for advise.

how many miles are on this engine? It sounds like the oil pump. dont put in a heavier grade of oil. you want your oil to flow free. like others said it could be oil sending unit. its cheap to replace try that first.

if this is a v6 engine they were real bad, about sludge build up in the heads,,, which means the oil is trapped in the top of the engine..an is real slow to drain back to the oil pan,, causing the engine to starve for oil..it will eventually destroy the crank
