In Bavaria they speak the Bavarian dialect, and the similar Swabian dialect is spoken in other regions of Southern Germany. These dialects differ from standard German and they sound a bit strange for me. I live in the middle of Germany (near Hanover) where standard German is spoken as the colloquial language. If you learn German as a foreign language you learn standard German and it might be hard then to understand the other dialects if you are not used to them. They aren't different languages, but they pronounce everything with a different accent, and use a few different words.
