Giga means Billion. Bytes are individual characters as saved on a disc or in RAM, hertz (or Hz) is the frequency of the clock used. The higher, the faster.

Sorry it's longwinded. Okay, the techincal info first. The first part of both words is giga, basically meaning a billion (or multiples of a billion). Gigabytes refer to an amount, like how much memory or how large a hard drive is. So, a 5 gigabyte HD has 5 billion bytes of storage available. It is also known as a 5GB or 5G drive. Gigahertz, on the other hand refers to a speed. Hertz is a measurement we use for speed or frequencies, usually talking about a CPU speed. Speeds for CPU's are a bit complicated due to not only the manufacturer (AMD vs Intel) but also due to features built into the chip such as cache. The larger the cache, the faster the CPU will run, regardless of it's "clock" speed.
Okay, so the tech stuff is done. Laptop, huh? You'll get what you pay for. There's so much out there, it's hard now to recommend one brand over another. I'd suggest buying from a name brand manufacturere, though and it would probably be best to get it from a vendor in your local area. Putting it in your car and driving over to the dealer is a lot better than packing it in a box and waiting a month to get it back. Get as much as you can for your money. If you budget a certain amount, get as close to the figure as you can. The two features you can update at a later time (when you've saved up more money) is the memory and the hard drive. Right now, it's best to go with at least 512MB of memory and the standard for most systems now is 80GB drives. Several vendors have web sites tha allow you to add features to the laptop and let you see the price as you make the changes.
I hope this helps.

Gigabytes/Megabytes is a term for measurement like a pound or ounce. Used when referring to a Hard Drive (amount of space). For RAM it's the amount of RAM. When referring to a Graphics Cards actually refers to the amount of RAM build into the card

Gigahertz reference speed...... like horse power on a car.

Either way, the more is usually the better.

GB is gigabyte (its a range of memory area) the distinction has no longer something to do with pix or something. It merely means that it may ward off extra information (video games, downloads, etc) on the console. no longer something extra there is unfold out that 40 GB PS3 has no memory slot and also afew little different issues

They are completely seperate, though it will come as no surprise that in each case "bigger is better."

Gigabytes refers to memory. Your computer's RAM and disk drive will be measured in gigabytes. Gigahertz refers to processor speed. If your computer's RAM is measured in megabytes, or the processor speed measured in megahertz, it's an old computer - upgrade.
