Is one kind of tire better than another? What's the difference? I understand that the brand-name makes a difference in price but when it comes down to it... isn't it just rubber on the road?

Why would 2 brands of tires that are the same size meant for the same car cost so much different?

the prices can be all over the place...depends on many things... how many miles are the tire rated for, is it a performance tire (those are even crazier with different speed ratings and the composition of the tire for traction)..... some tires are all weather rated, some are not.... lots of variables..... if you dont need a performance tire, than your comparison should focus on the miles they are rated for..... cheap tires are cheap for a reason, they wont last as long

Mostly its how many miles they are rated for. One brand can have several different "lines" of tires-- the cheaper ones generally are only rated 20-30K miles-- the more expensive are supposed to last 50,000 miles PLUS.

It's about how much rubber they're putting on, the tread patterns, etc. They're not all the same thickness on either the tread or sidewalls.

No, they aren't just rubber on the road. Performance (will they be used mostly for higher speeds), safety (do they grip well, do they slide while stopping), durability (cheaper tires wear quicker), what your needs are as far as the weather is concerned, they all play a big part in the price.

Your partially right however some tires do last longer, balance better and give a better/safer ride as long as you rotate them every other oil service or 5000 miles, very very important. I'm a fan of Michelin and no I'm not a tire dealer of Michelin. Their the only tire that gives me the ride I like.
