With the "war on terrorism", the war in the middle east, conflicts in Darfur, the problems that still exist with the Hurricane Katrina survivors, and the fact that racism(toward other groups and inter-racism) as a problem, should we care what movies won (even though Scorese truly deserved it finally) while all the problems exist? Or is the Oscars another excuse to ignore the problems at hand?

I wouldn't say an excuse to ignore the problems at hand but a chance to escape them. there are many problems in life both personal and world wide that are simply not going to be solved, not that they shouldn't be or that they couldn't be, just that in reality they are not going to get solved ever or not for a very long time. In the meantime we cannot live and constantly look at our problems, Even when you are the most deeply emmersed in those problems you need a break from the tension some relief from the difficulties if for no other reason than to rest body mind and soul so that you can continue to endure the problems or gather strength to fight against them. The Oscars and other entertainments, might be frivilous int he face of world problems but they serve a real and necessary function that directly correlates to those problems. Everyone needs a break, why not Oscar?

Everyone of us needs a release from the 'real lives' we all lead. There's nothing wrong with the Oscars or watching movies. Now ask yourself this: Why are you on Yahoo Answers talking about Movies when you 'could' be using this time and your computer to fight the 'war on terrorism', 'the war in the middle east', 'confilcts in Darfur', 'the problems that still exist with the Hurricane Katrina survivors, and the 'fact that racism (toward other groups and inter-racism) is a problem? I'll tell you why. Because you like movies. Period. :-)

That we ought to consistently handle all the trivial problems with existence heavily, and all the severe problems with existence with truthful and studied triviality. the different 'Oscar' Wilde had have been given there first, interior the 'magnitude of being Earnest' And it is not that persons care much less for the folk of the Congo. yet they can't do something, if 50 million human beings (or in spite of the undeniable fact that many watched the Oscars) all of sudden became up interior the congo, there may well be a severe difficulty then. yet many of the folk watching don't have the potential or desire. they don't comprehend those human beings interior the Congo. What with reference to the female who lives alongside the line, shouldn't she be helped first. And if the 'West' sends help to the Congo does it bypass to the folk it would. probable no longer. stop attempting to connect 2 unconnected issues. human beings dying from a loss of unpolluted water is the accountability of the Congolese government, who have not carried out an undemanding ingredient like supply sparkling water. Get directly to them harrass them. Oh do no longer come crying to me with a bullet on your head on your problems?

It is not something to care about, this is a forum to talk about your own interests, what you like and what you enjoy. This is, as this category name say, Entertainment.
The people who likes movies, like to talk about this, if you are so care about terrorism, and war in the middle east, yous should try to go to Politics, or some other category of Yahoo Answers.
I hope i'm not rude, but to tell you the true, people who talks about that kind of problems, wich are as important as you say, but don't have really nothing to do about that, i don't see the point.
If you are proactive about those, i really congratulate you, even thank you, really!
But here i am for entertainment.

I don't want to give Hollywood too much credit for "Art".
Still movie making is an art form and we have need of that creative outlet. To banish creativity from our minds would make us dullards and I think in turn would cause an even more turgid response to the ills of the world.

I agree with you that clearly Americans (and the rest of the world) have bigger fish to fry. But in the end, we all need happiness as well. what a sick world we would be if no body took a minute out to breathe, and laugh? I am concerned about the state of the world, but not at the price of my own health!

Remember after 9/11 when everyone said that all that Hollywood glitz and self-congratulation was no longer important or in good taste? Boy, do we forget fast.

A lot of people care, including me and I don't even work in the industry.

In case you didn't see the show, it was noteworthy for its diversity. For that people from many countries, many cultures and many races to come together to honor the hard work of talented people has got to be a good thing.

I don't know why people care so much about these award shows. It's just a reason for spoiled actors to celebrate themselves and run their mouthes about topics they know little about.
And we're the idiots that hand them their paycheck and make them so famous.
