In the U.S., the rewards you receive reflect your actual achievements. For example, if you get good grades in High School, you can gain entry into a presigious University, which will then open up doors to a better career.

If you are good at your job, you will probably advance in the company over someone who is not as talented and productive.

In other countries, this system does not work as well. There are social, cultural, and racial barriers. In India, certain casts cannot climb the social ladder no matter how talented they are; they simply will not be allowed to. In Brazil, where they claim there is no discrimination, the opposite is quite true: blacks are rarely allowed to advance. Their lighter-skinned counterparts are traditionally assigned the plum jobs and get the most perks.

I'd say "Tom" answered this pretty accurately...and to expand on his answer...suffice to say that it's ALSO why socialist societies tend to either fail or wallow in mediocrity, any incentive to succeed is diminished or removed all together if everything either goes to the govt, or is shared equally. A meritocracy tends to have more 'haves"....socialist and other similar societies, tend to have more "have nots"

Read the peter principal.
The assumption being that upward mobility is allowed while functionality exists. After that a nonfunctional, is locked into place. That's meritorious.

Not to be confused with the Aristotelean philosophy.

He who has the most money has the most merit. Only the most meritorious citizens get elected to high office. America's brightest and best citizen occupies the White House.

The people who achieve the most, get rewarded more. Achieve the most in high school, then you have the most options in your choice in college. CEO's are generally the ones who have proven themselves to be great leaders in business (See Lee Iacocca). Best Coaches are the ones who get the biggest contracts to coach, ect...
