We are planning to go up to Montreal this summer and my sister in law has been raving about the Bar B Barn on Guy Street, but she wasn't sure if it still exists. Does anyone know?

Yes it exists (still at 2 locations - in the city and in suburban Dollard) and it still advertises a lot about its "famous barbeque" but for those that know what real barbeque should be it is still a great cruddy disappointment (yes, you can tell your sister-in-law*) so if you are familiar with true Memphis and/or Carolina and/or K.C.and/or Texas BBQs don't expect anything.at all from the Bar B Barn.

In fact, there is no place in or around Montréal, this otherwise centre of gastronomy in Canada, where one can find a genuine barbeque. Partly this is caused by severe laws here and fines for restaurants passing ANY odors so building genuine pit restaurants are almost impossible or their complete filtering of odors in their ventilation just too expensive. What passes for barbeque here is usually rotisseried, and often ribs are preboiled and just baked, with the ickiest, stickiest sweet sauce (the classic sauce for the chicken, when not slathered with the same awfully sweet sauce used on ribs, is a uniquely Quebecois sour gravy and takes some getting used to if one is not a native).

The nearest semi-decent BBQ to Montréal is in Burlington, VT, the nearest great ones are close to Boston, Hartford and New York City.
