Without a doubt, Ronald Wilson Reagan.

In the 1970's the Republican party was in shambles. It was still reeling from Nixon's Watergate and Ford's bitter defeat in the 1976 election.

Along comes Ronald Reagan who rescues the Conservative movement from the political wilderness. In the late 1970's he told Republicans to "stick to your guns and to not be afraid to be a Conservative even if it's uncool". He won the White House of course in 1980 defeating Carter in a landslide.

For the next decade, he re-shaped the politics of America, tilting it to the Right. He also confronted the USSR which led to it's ultimate collapse. Today's Conservatives owe him a great debt of gratitude for his efforts.

PS:
Newt Gingrich??? You've got to be kidding?? The guy got his butt kicked by Clinton in the 98 mid-terms and had to step down.
Reagan never, ever blinked!!

If you mean, "American conservative", I'd have to say Collin Powell. People on both sides of the divide listen when he talks.

I realize that the far right doesn't care for him much, but a great many more moderate Conservatives are still very interested in hearing from him. And he's got the ear of Liberals too.

Newt Gingrich has been the most influential since Ronald Reagan. Reagan's influence is still being felt.

I'm going to presume that by this generation you meant the republican stranglehold that was recently broken? Newt, for his Contract on America, the term he used was a lie, we see the results of that contract. Eleven years of controlling congress, six years of complete control of the government and all we have is a four year old fiasco, massive debt, our jobs going to people working at slave labor wages and an invasion from Mexico. Thanks Newt.

I think Regan's ideas still hold true. However the only one I see pushing them would be Newt.
